Bistro Zvezda – Ljubljana (Slovénie) en

Summary

Zvezda is known first for its bakery/ salon de thé at the corner.
They opened this restaurant a few years back in front of the park.
I stumbled on a blog that described it as the best lunch deal in Ljubljana for its price-quality ratio.
I went there during the  festival of restaurants and the 13 euros menu made for the occasion was wonderful. I asked to see the regular menu and the prices are also very appropriate.

The venue

Located in front of the Zvezda park and on this sunny day, we were ideally seating outside.
We were first sat inside, because there weren’t enough seats on the patio and when some spots opened up we asked if we could change, we were told we could, there was no problem. Nice.
We see the downtown come alive, the students, the many bikers, and everything else.

The team

Really nice, young, same kind of place as the other restaurants I tried out that restaurant week.

The meal

You can tell there is a pastry knowledge background: everything is precise, dishes are well balances, well decorated.
For the appetizer we took a pizza, the house specialty, which was offered to us because I announced I was a blogger I think.
Nice, but it was missing something, salt, pepper, something, I’m not sure what.

Shrimp risotto
There’s a 180 degree shift, nothing to say, it’s delightful.

Veal rump steak, natural cream sauce (?, literal translation), grilled truffle polenta! Yep, we find black truffle in Slovenia. This country has potential, didn’t I tell you!
Impeccable cook on the steak, medium rare which is necessary but not too much so, polenta “aux aguets”.
They’re not taking us for morons.

Chocolate soufflé ( this was on many restaurants’ menus, you can tell they love it), Madagascar vanilla ice cream, lavender macaron
Multicolored dessert, all made in house, same for the macaron. Excellent.

The verdict

13 euros, oh yeah. It was the festival menu, but a bad chef couldn’t come up with this good of a menu once a year.
So, I give my stamp of approval to this place that looks a bit sophisticated from the outside, but that in terms of location, food and service, is very well worth it.
After all, it’s not because you’re in another country that you always have to eat traditional food, you can also enjoy a nice contemporary pub, in a charming setting.
