Fellin – Viljandi (Estonia) en

Summary

Fellin opened up at the beginning of 2013, and yet, it’s already the most well known coffee shop in the city.

The food is (very) good, service is considerate, however it is slow, and the music (overdone jazz singing) is just a headache. Otherwise, it’s definitely a good place to check out when you’re in the city center.

The venue

The interior is nicely decorated.

The team

The nice, young manager accepted to offer me breakfast when the tourism office asked. My waitress was very considerate, but seemed a little intimidated. The other server was a friend so I can’t really be objective:)

The coffee shop is run by a woman that likes the idea of making this place a cool, classy place, the only this is that her choice of Jazz could be changed into something a bit better!:)

The meal

Every day there is a menu with a soup and main, that day it was pumpkin soup (2.50 euros) and smoked herring and potatoes (4.50 euros).

I was offered a main and dessert so it’s true that I was more interested in the à la carte menu, it looked really appetizing. The fact that the local farms from which the produce came from were mentioned was much appreciated.

I started with a buck thorn juice: it’s a yellow wild acidic berry often recommended for sore throats, this juice was delicious!

A nicely compiled wine list in my opinion.

I went for a glass of Destinea Sauvignon Blanc which I really liked.

Appetizer

Isn’t this a sight for sore eyes? Grilled duck liver, caramelized apples, cranberries, wine sauce.

Simply sumptuous, the only problem: the apples were cold. Everything else was hot, and they should have been the same temperature as to not break the plate’s harmony.

The bread is incredible, the one thing is that it should be sliced thinner.

Main

Rabbit, Turkish beans, celeriac, parsley and rabbit demi-glace

I chose this main because it was just added to the menu, usually they don’t have rabbit; it was good but the thigh could have been cooked a bit more since both pieces on the right were perfectly cooked, otherwise, it was good.

Dessert

I didn’t write down what it was, very original in its presentation and successful in taste: a hay (?) ice cream, blueberries and a type of granola.

The verdict

A restaurant everyone needs to know when visiting Viljandi.
