Lokal – Prague (Czech Republic) en

Summary

Here is a place known for its traditional czech cuisine in a revisited atmosphere.  It’s a success, for Czechs and foreigners alike, it’s full all the time, and it’s good.
That being said, it’s more expensive than other traditional restaurants of the same type.

The venue

It’s located in the historic center. The dining room is a long room, there’s the smoking area first, and the non-smoking one at the back.

We had to wait a good 25 minutes that thursday night because it was full. We had called in advance but it was impossible to make reservation . So we waited at the bar with a good pint.

The team

The service was pretty good, they didn’t all speak English, but we had a girl who did speak it, and it was a lot more practical that way. She didn’t hesitate to recommend some dishes to us; with all the people there, service had to be on top of it.

The meal

Appetizer
A house chicken noodle broth. Really good, tasty.

Mains
I’d asked our waitress to recommend a typical dish that she liked, not one that tourists took, so it was:
A pork neck steak with fried onions, beets, and an onion sauce.  The meat was good, and well cooked, the dish itself was pretty simple, but I was pretty happy with it regardless.
I described it later to expats that have lived in Prague for 5 years and they told me that it wasn’t a typical dish, however it was one of the restaurant’s specialties.  269 korunas, so 11 euros, which is not nothing over here.

The person with me took the chicken.

I’d asked for potatoes on the side, a side dish: they were delicious and so well done. When I think about all those frozen fries that poison our Parisian bistrots, when potatoes are so good when they’re well done…

Dessert
I’d taken a dessert: a traditional Czech cake with crème fraîche, it was also good, but I didn’t take a picture.

The verdict

Very good start to a night, however either come early or late at night, or reserve earlier in the day ( not at the last minute), or be ready to drink a few beers before getting sat, especially if you’re a group; if you don’t mind eating in the smoking area, it’s easier to get a table there.
